Pelvic Health and Public Health in Twentieth Century Canada (PH | PH) is a Canadian Institutes of Health Research project led by Dr. Whitney Wood, Canada Research Chair in the Historical Dimensions of Women’s Health at Vancouver Island University (VIU). The PH | PH project explores how pelvic health issues became matters of growing public health concern between the late-1960s and 2000. The aim of this research is to provide historical context that will inform the efforts of individual pelvic health patients and clients, health care practitioners, and health activists to improve pelvic health services in twenty-first century Canada.
As part of this research, we are interested in speaking to pelvic health patients and clients, health activists, and health practitioners of all types who were active in providing pelvic health care in Canada during the second half of the twentieth century. This includes all individuals who have or have had reproductive organs historically classified as “female” (i.e., a uterus) with lived experiences of pelvic health issues, gynecological care, and pelvic pain between 1970 and 2000. The results of our research will be shared via academic and creative outputs, including conference presentations and public talks, scholarly articles and book chapters, an edited volume, policy briefs, graphic history posters, and a short film.
If you are interested in contributing to this research through participating in a remote interview via telephone or zoom, please contact the project team at pelvic.health@viu.ca. Interviews will be approximately one hour in duration, and participants will receive a $50 honorarium for their participation.
